. . . had you unblocked at trick two? Unless you had won that first spade with an honour and continued unblocking when West cashed spadeA then the contract would be solid. With no communication to the South hand, North would have to give declarer an easy ten tricks.

Note that against most declarers North's opening lead would have been inspirational. West ducks to retain an entry to dummy and relies on a 3-2 heart break for his contract. The inspired declarer was Frenchman Alain Lévy.
