At the table South automatically played low at trick one and East brilliantly did likewise. West switched to a trump and played another when in with A. South could establish a long club, but with West holding a third trump there was no way to cash it unless South restricted himself to a single diamond ruff in dummy. Great defence from East, but an original trump lead would have killed the contract stone dead.
