By covering the opening lead!!! If either of the opponents are void in hearts then surely it will be East, so by inserting spade9 (or the queen) we ensure that a trump is not led at trick two. East would probably continue spades, so South would ruff, cross to clubA, ruff a spade, return to clubK, ruff a club high and lead a diamond. West wins and switches to a trump, but South can simply ruff another club high and draw trumps.

At the table South automatically played low at trick one and East brilliantly did likewise. West switched to a trump and played another when in with diamondA. South could establish a long club, but with West holding a third trump there was no way to cash it unless South restricted himself to a single diamond ruff in dummy. Great defence from East, but an original trump lead would have killed the contract stone dead.
