. . . so it was a pleasant surprise at half-time for East-West to find that the universal result at the other tables was plus 750 to North-South. West had made a disciplined pass over 3spade, North had protected with 4diamond, raised by South, after which West had closed the auction with a very confident double. The respective Wests were to be disappointed - East could not lead a trump and 5diamond was absolutely cold.

It's hard to not to feel a little sympathy for North at the original table - with sight of all four hands it looks clear cut for him to bid 5diamond, but at the prevailing vulnerability would not we all hesitate to enter the auction with so many losers?
