. . . or so South thought. South rose with spadeA in dummy only to see East show out! Her female opponent in the West seat had executed the legendary Grosvenor Coup, whereby a 100% play had been rejected to produce a psychological advantage over an opponent. Here West could have been sure of a spade trick by covering spade9 with the queen and when South saw East's club3 she went to pieces. With success via an end-play on East still possible declarer completely misjudged the situation to finish one light.
