South's crafty pair of passes had shown that North had at most one spade, and therefore a small slam would be cold if North had one ace, a grand slam would be certain if North had an unlikely two aces. So on the third round South at last came to life with Blackwood. North, who presumably must have been used to South's antics, responded with 5 allowing South to leap to 6.
