West found a potentially dangerous but highly effective switch when led spade4 at trick two! Declarer, a highly gifted player, was aware that West might hold both queen and jack of spades but eventually put in spade8 from dummy. On winning East's nine with the king, South advanced heartQ, ducked all round. Still playing East for a spade honour, South had assigned heartK to West for his double so declarer's next card was heartJ - and that meant two off and +500 for the defenders' resourcefulness. Unless the defence did something daft then this contract was always going one off - it just required a little nudge to get the extra 300. Well defended indeed!
