And so it came to pass. At the other table North rebid 3club over South's 2NT. South, still reluctant to bid such an anaemic suit, tried 3diamond. When hearts were finally mentioned for the first time South raised to 5heart (bid a slam with good hearts) and North duly obliged.

With fifteen top tricks in three denominations, 6heart wasn't exactly a triumph. 7NT, cold against any distribution, is the best contract, but my partner had won his unlikely bet.
