West opened only at the one level, but despite this East eventually leapt to a dreadful grand slam. Even if the diamonds broke kindly then there would be only eleven tricks on top, so East would probably need either a doubleton heartQJ or a singleton clubK to bring home his slam.

Nevertheless East found that an extra chance was being offered ..
