6NT was indeed cold - with both rounded suits breaking kindly there was no problem. Incidentally, there is a very similar safety play available in both hearts and clubs. Declarer starts with heart A and clubK respectively - when East has heartJ1076 and West has clubJ1076 declarer can still avoid the loss of any trick other than diamondA.

If this hand had occurred today then North would probably have doubled 6diamond to haul in 1100, but back then North was not content with 900 and bid 6heart. The reward for their accuracy in finding 6club originally was that East misjudged and decided to bid 7diamond - an expensive mistake possibly, but we'll never know if West would have found diamondQ lead.
