6NT was indeed cold - with both rounded suits breaking kindly there was no problem. Incidentally, there is a very similar safety play available in both hearts and clubs. Declarer starts with A and K respectively - when East has J1076 and West has J1076 declarer can still avoid the loss of any trick other than A.

If this hand had occurred today then North would probably have doubled 6 to haul in 1100, but back then North was not content with 900 and bid 6. The reward for their accuracy in finding 6 originally was that East misjudged and decided to bid 7 - an expensive mistake possibly, but we'll never know if West would have found Q lead.
