This deal dates from over 30 years ago, and in the original event +800 scored better than average because few pairs bid the slam. It is more likely that modern East-West pairs would reach 6diamond because East would have splintered over North's double (or the much more likely 1heart overcall). Even so, the original West might have tried something slightly more subtle over South's 3spade than a crude leap to 5diamond.

If East-West do reach 6diamond then North-South face a tricky decision whether to go for the profitable sacrifice in 6spade.
