Answer: because he doesn't want to stop in 4club and is on the way to 'better things'. On the actual hand there were eleven top tricks, and when I passed 4club partner was not a happy bunny. Incidentally, South had both heartAK and 3NT was cold too!

Perhaps playing 1diamond-2club-2diamond-3club as forcing has more merit than I realised!
