I've been a little devious here - of course it's right to give partner a ruff. At the table West thought he'd cut declarer off from dummy by returning a diamond. A very grateful Tony Forrester went up with the ace, drew the last trump and established the spades with the help of his own spade ruff. South still had two more "singleton" diamonds and one of them was used to access dummy via diamondK. +980 to North-South instead of -50.

In the other room a sensible auction saw North-South reach 6spade - a much easier contract in spite of the 4-0 break.
