I suspect that the response that West heard was East's jaw as it bounced of the floor when West showed out on A, but to be fair to West the contract was a perfectly reasonable one - if you like playing in 50%ish slams. Note that the opening lead makes very little difference, although I have since received an e-mail from Russell Graham explaining that the contract can be made on a spade lead. Rise with
J, pitch a diamond on
A and ruff the third round of diamonds in hand.
A is forced out and dummy can be entered with
8 to throw
Q on the thirteenth diamond.
This deal was a very unlucky one for our opposing team. Both their pairs played in 6 minus one. One of our pairs reached the dizzy heights of 7
(don't ask) and the other played in 4
plus two. Had North been the lucky owner of
Q we would have lost the 24 board match 5-7 instead of winning 8-4.
