Double dummy analyser: makeable contracts

2NT. It was forcing, and West wanted to hear East's response.

I suspect that the response that West heard was East's jaw as it bounced of the floor when West showed out on clubA, but to be fair to West the contract was a perfectly reasonable one - if you like playing in 50%ish slams. Note that the opening lead makes very little difference, although I have since received an e-mail from Russell Graham explaining that the contract can be made on a spade lead. Rise with spadeJ, pitch a diamond on clubA and ruff the third round of diamonds in hand. heartA is forced out and dummy can be entered with heart8 to throw spadeQ on the thirteenth diamond.

This deal was a very unlucky one for our opposing team. Both their pairs played in 6heart minus one. One of our pairs reached the dizzy heights of 7diamond (don't ask) and the other played in 4heart plus two. Had North been the lucky owner of diamondQ we would have lost the 24 board match 5-7 instead of winning 8-4.
