At the table South went up with the ace and switched to a diamond - not fatal, but when South won with diamondK, cashed heartAK and naively continued with a spade he had made it simple for declarer. The correct defence - cash heartAK and continue with clubs - should have been obvious to a dozy South, but which club should North have played to make the club position clear? Ace, ten or queen? As it happened, East won the spade switch at trick six with the ace in dummy, drew the last trump and finessed diamondJ. Nine tricks. Cui culpa?
