Over the years I've become quite used to plenty of abuse when it comes to my bidding, and last night's league match proved to be no exception. Nevertheless there was an unusual twist. Our club belongs to the nomadic variety and this year it is my job to take the bidding boards and boxes to our home venue - which is not a bridge club but a room on the fourth floor of a university tower block. Somehow I had allowed one of the 16 bidding boxes to go astray and I was forced to knock up a Heath-Robinson "silent bidder" - remember them? This produced much hilarity when I was occasionally offered the use of some bidding-box cards of the (silent) opposition during the auction. One even forgot to use his bidding box and started pointed to the silent bidder. At least it made a change from normal.
