. . . for although declarer can establish a spade winner to throw a diamond, he will run out of trumps before he is able to engineer an end-play on the defence. Try it. For example, win diamondA and lead spadeQ, covered and ruffed. Now two rounds of trumps ending in dummy, spadeJ covered and ruffed again. clubA is cashed, dummy is entered via a trump to heart8, spade10 cashed and dummy's final spade ruffed. North has no trumps left, so the defence is not end-played when North exits with a diamond.
