The winning defence is to carry on partner's good work and continue with clubs, effectively cutting declarer's communications with dummy. North is finished - a third club is ruffed by East and any diamond finesse is doomed to failure.

Hats off to partner for finding the club switch - several Easts led a diamond at this stage and their respective Norths soon wrapped up +650. The best defensive result came where East-West were silent. East led a club initially and North knew he was in trouble. After winning in dummy, a diamond finesse lost and back came a second club. Again dummy won and again a diamond finesse lost. A diamond ruff and trump promotion eventually led to three down. Ouch!
