. . . but in fact declarer had cashed spadeA before continuing with diamondJ. Look at the difference it makes on this layout. When diamondJ is not ruffed South exits with a club from dummy and although East is able to win, he has no spade with which to exit, and so the contract comes home anyway.

On the actual layout declarer's careful line made absolutely no difference ... but who knows about next time?
