The successful East led a heart to the queen! South continued with spadeQ so East won in hand to lead ace and another diamond. When South came in with diamondK he persisted with another spade and East had his nine tricks.

This is one of those ruses that we all love to get away with, and it's comforting to know that even seasoned internationals fall for it.
