As you will have guessed, our star declarer did neither of these. He ran heart9 to East's jack at trick three and won clubK switch with dummy's ace. He then led heartQ from dummy. Whether East covered or not, declarer had both restricted his trump losers to one and retained a vital entry to dummy. By leading diamond10 from dummy South could take the diamond finesse twice and bring home his contract. An initial club lead or switch to clubs at trick two would have broken the contract.

The declarer? Martin Hoffman.
