Perhaps hoping for two diamond ruffs North won the first club but, rather than rely on South having spadeA, cashed heartA to see South's reaction. On seeing heart10 he continued with another heart and was able to ruff the diamond return. Although a second ruff was not available, plus 300 was still an excellent score. Many North-South pairs were not allowed to play in 4spade and took merely 100 from 5club doubled.
