North had been caught in a one suit squeeze. Either he would eventually have to come down to spadeAQJ, in which case a small spade would have end-played him, or alternatively he could come down to spadeAJ8 - as he did - when South's spade10 could be pinned. The Italian declarer exited with spadeK and made the last trick with spade9. At another table a British declarer played North to have spadeAJ10 remaining and exited with spade6. Unlucky.
