. . . when I said a grand slam was reached in the Open Room I forgot to mention that it was West who was declarer!!!! Jeff Meckstroth calculated that his sacrifice would be a likely winner because he could see that both clubs and hearts would be breaking kindly. Nevertheless, it takes severe bottle to something like this down at the local club's annual teams - let alone the final of the World Championship! The defence was not card perfect, so Meckstroth got away with minus 1700, but +11 IMPs.
