. . . where South played low on the opening lead East went up with the ace and, on seeing declarer's spade2, naturally assumed that West's spade was a singleton. East returned a spade and, when South ruffed, the result of playing low at trick one was clear to everyone. South drew trumps ending in dummy and declarer's four losing diamonds went on dummy's major suit winners.

North-South +920.

An opening trump lead would also have killed the contract. East withholds the jack so South wins cheaply, crosses to diamondK and pitches his losing spade on heartA. However, when he trries to establish the diamonds East is able to overruff dummy and return clubJ, leaving South with too many losing diamonds in hand.
