Of course West could have played the contract better. Apart from the missing out on the favourable spade position, if he is prepared to take a chance on the hearts being no worse than 4-2 then he should cash just one initial trump, ruff out the hearts as before and only then draw the last trump by crossing back to dummy. After pitching his club loser on the fifth heart he can then take the spade finesse quite unconcernedly. Thirteen tricks.
