Incidentally, what are your "normal" methods in this situation? South's 3club is made in the pre-balancing situation - he may have been under pressure to bid with a hand of limited strength. Maybe a competitive double or a cue bid of 3spade on these North cards would show a better raise in clubs, but it is hard to see that 4club would help partner in a decision of whether to go on. Watch out for this hand in a future Bridge Magazine Bidding Challenge - we'll see what the experts say. At the table North contented himself with 4club and East raised to 4spade. You can now see why it North's 4club did not work well, for a double of 4spade from either North or South would have led to a satisfying result, but without any particular reason South raised himself to game.

This was doubled, of course, and West led ace, king and a third spade to his partner's queen. How can South recover his lost match points?
