As you can imagine South was ever so slightly shocked, but recovered well to make his grand slam when the diamonds proved to be kind.
Of course North ought to have opened but, despite his revolting (or tactically brilliant) bid of 4, the auction had developed so well that he was able to envisage most of South's hand and felt fully justified in making the leap to 7
