Whilst we're talking of bridge fallings-out I must tell you of a favourite story - it has passed into local bridge folklore. Player X, as we shall call him, was playing at a nearby city club against a relative newcomer, Player Y. Now Y didn't realise that X knew his way around a pack of cards and, after X had secured an excellent result by good declarer play, Y accused X of "not conducting himself within the rules of the game", "obtaining a good result by foul means" . I'm sure that you can see what I'm getting at. Anyway, X is/was not a man to take a false accusation laying down and suggested that they adjourn to the car park to discuss the matter further. This they duly did, and after X had removed three of Y's teeth without anaesthetic, X returned to the table in time for the next round. When the committee eventually met to discuss the matter, Player Y was banned from the club!!!!! It was rightly deemed a far worse crime to call an innocent opponent a cheat than to perform unsolicited dentistry on another who had impugned your reputation.
