West has an unenviable choice: he can win the diamond and end-play himself, or sacrifice his diamondA by ducking and allow North to establish the clubs.
It's similar on a trump lead. North wins in dummy and immediately ruffs a spade. He now draws trumps, exits with diamondQ and reaps the reward for taking the essential early spade ruff.
