This excellent slam was doomed by Peter Weichsel's opening trump lead and the unkind breaks in clubs and trumps. Declarer won the lead and set about the clubs. After criss-crossing back and forth from hand to dummy with black suit ruffs, declarer eventually cashed his top trumps and exited with club10. Although South was end-played, North was left holding heart9 and the slam was beaten. 4-4-4-1 hands are notoriously difficult to develop - a trump opening lead is often the best defensive option.
