Simon (eagle-eye) Stokes had spotted something which had I certainly missed. You'll remember that North played in 4spade after East had made a take out double of 1spade. Declarer won the diamond lead with the king in hand, cashed spadeK and crossed to diamondA to ruff a diamond. After returning to dummy with spadeA North led dummy's last diamond with the intention of ruffing in hand. Take a look at West's predicament. If he throw a heart, as he did at the table, declarer can now get home legitimately by ruffing the diamond and leading a heart from hand. East is forced to go up with the queen, and after cashing the ace North's heartKx are now good enough for two tricks, enabling two club discards from dummy! Ten tricks without heroics. However, if West pitches a club on dummy's last diamond then it's all over for declarer.
