At the table East failed to switch to a spade! The bidding marks South with at least nine cards in the pointed suits and the play has shown that he holds at least three hearts including the queen, so he has one club at most. The club suit is therefore not running immediately but South will be able to establish the suit whatever his singleton. However he will also need an outside entry to dummy to enjoy the clubs and you can see that spadeQ is the only candidate.
