Thinking that West would be short in spades, declarer finessed spadeJ at trick two. On winning with the queen West underled her heartA to put East in with the king. The diamond return put declarer one down.

North's 3diamond was certainly a strange decision - how did she know what West's minor was? Nevertheless North's choice would have turned out wonderfully had South bid 6diamond. When North discovers the 4-0 trump split the spade finesse becomes much less attractive and 6diamond should always be made.
