The missed and subtle inference was that West must have a heart suit - why had he not pre-empted originally? Having misplayed the hand already, North should now cash heartA, cross to heartK and ruff a diamond. Why? West surely cannot have eight diamonds, but would he not have bid hearts with six? East is now down to just three clubs and can be end-played when North exits with a low one.

All this end-play stuff is very well, but it should not have been necessary ..
