An old friend, or should that be fiend, turned up at last night's qualifying round for the National Pairs. Over the years I have spent many a happy hour with my cards upturned on the table while Willie Crook put the opposition defenders through the mill, but last night he sat on my left.

Today's deal comes from the same competition many years ago, where that man, Mr. Crook by name and declarer by nature, was at the helm .. as usual.
