Ace and another club (the four for suit preference!) was the winner. The heart return gave the defence four tricks. There is some logic to the lead. If West was contemplating going on then surely he would be less likely to be doing so with a void in his partner's suit - hence he might have some clubs, leaving partner with few. As my correspondent says - partner can hardly have an ace, let alone something approaching two tricks. Also, E-W might have a 4-3 Club fit in which case partner can have a complete Yarborough and yet 4spade still goes down.
