You can see what happened - West was hoist by his own petard. Having taken the decision to reopen with such a marginal hand, he didn't fancy the idea of going on to 5spade so he doubled to prevent East doing so. The defence took the obvious two tricks.

The best result that could have been achieved by West was to leave 3club well alone.
