Would you have found the heart switch? Even an initial low diamond would have been OK had West found the switch to heartQ at trick two, for a heart ruff then becomes automatic. You can see that in the minds of both of the defenders it would be fraught with danger to opt for a heart - but that is exactly what it takes to beat North's 4spade.
