Schapiro cashed three top clubs and Flint had no answer. To discard a heart would allow declarer to cash the ace and drop both missing honours. To discard a diamond would mean South could ruff a diamond and leave dummy high.

Rose should have followed the basic "under-pressure" rule of discarding the suit held on his left - i.e. hearts. Only if South held three would this be fatal.
