At the table East, a very good player, did the wrong thing for the right reason. Knowing that North was a player who was unlikely to take advantage, East ducked! Sure enough, North could not bear to lose out to an original West holding of spade9xx and rose with the king. When West showed out all hope was lost and eventually declarer was one off.

Personally, I think North's play was bonkers. Even if the spade finesse had lost then North could tell, with all those heart honours, that unless West had all the club goodies a heart switch would look very attractive. Besides, the clubs might have been blocked.
