It's probably slightly better to let diamond8 hold, because then you can ruff a club which might isolate the menace in that suit for use in a potential squeeze. It didn't matter here, because after winning with the nine, declarer ruffed a spade and ran all the trumps. Eventually the heart finesse provided the twelfth trick when declarer decided that North started with four hearts. Bad contract, nice score.
