West did not give the hand enough thought. Not unduly worried about the prospect of a bad heart split, he rose with diamondA and immediately went for quick discards on the hearts, intending to play four rounds. Of course, the error of his ways was soon apparent when South ruffed heartA and returned a diamond. After winning diamondQ North switched to clubs and because dummy had been denuded of entries there were still two spades and a club to lose, so West was two off. I think North, Mike Ayers, was to blame for leading a beastly diamond at trick one - most unkind.
