Proceeding on the basis that only South would be short in hearts, West attacked the suit by leading the jack and running it when North played low. When South followed with the eight West was concerned if it was a singleton, but having detected no pause from North, who might have dithered with heartQ10xx, declarer played a small heart to the king, South dropping the ten after a sadistic pause. clubK was led from the dummy and South won to continue with clubJ. Now West was able to establish a second club trick without worrying about the need for a second spade trick. Game was made with four hearts, three diamonds and two clubs.
