The defence could have prevailed by leading a diamond initially. South wins and leads a club as before, so West wins the second round and the defence play two rounds of trumps to kill the threat of two club ruffs in the South hand. A heart is led from dummy but East wins and reverts to diamonds, killing the vital entry to the double menace in declarer's hand. A similar defence after a trump lead and continuation is also successful.
