In an ideal world it would be preferable to lead a club towards dummy. If West had singleton ace, clubAJ or clubA10 then he would be forced to win the club trick yet unable to attack spades profitably. Not only that, but there would be no problem for South about the clubs being blocked (look at those dreadful club pips!), for it could always be arranged for dummy to win the third round. So, what to do?
