At rubber bridge I would guess that, as a practical South, you would leap to 4spade, whereas at IMPS you might select a more circuitous route in the quest for a slam. At the table the auction was short and sweet. When South did indeed bid 4spade, North had enough good controls and support to bid the slam directly.
