At the table West did exactly the right thing by cashing spadeAK to dispose of a diamond and immediately ruffing a spade at trick three. She continued with ace and another trump and South was fixed. After the bidding it was no problem for West to read where the high cards were, and eventually she lost one trump, one diamond and one club. Had declarer carelessly played trumps without ruffing the spade then South would have had an easy exit card and the contract would have failed.
There is one extraordinary fact about this hand. Unlike 4heart by West, 3NT by Easr is cold against absolutely any defence .. On a combined 19 points!
