Table presence is a great but intangible asset, and Sowter rose with diamondA dropping the singleton king offside! Any normal line in any normal contract might involve finesses in both red suits, whereas Sowter took neither. He scored a hair-raising plus 750 for this result whereas had he finessed the diamond he would have been minus 1700.
