OK - if we are playing with our favourite partner some of us might bid 2club forcing, but South was playing with an unfamiliar partner (my correspondent) and wasn't inclined to play in a part-score. I don't blame him either! In a pleasant and perhaps unexpected development partner raises to 5club.
