b) The lack of self-confidence one.
c) The practical one.
At our table South was a scientist and the bidding died at 3club. In other cases South biffed a direct 3NT - surely the correct decision, for partner will not be weak at this vulnerability. How would you play on a low diamond lead? Let's say you rise with diamondQ and it holds. Over to you.
